It was a children’s book but it still made me cry。 I definitely recommend this if you want to read a short and good story。 It literally took my like 2 hours to read, and I’m a slow reader。

Having read this book in primary school and coming back to it now ready to assist in teaching it I remember just how much I love it。 Morpurgo really does just have a way with words and draws you in - a very good book for any age

I simply love Morpurgo's books: they are easy for kids to read, they seem real enough to keep me glued to the book but fictional enough to make me daydream about never-ending possibilities! All is not right with the world。 Mum and dad have lost their jobs at the local brickworks along with hundreds of others。 There is little work in the area for them and times are tough。 They have lost the happiness and joy from their lives and Dad is particularly troubled。 He decides to make a decision for all the family that will change their lives forever, but not in the way they think。 Having been asked to read the first chapter of this for English class at University, I couldn't put it down an All is not right with the world。 Mum and dad have lost their jobs at the local brickworks along with hundreds of others。 There is little work in the area for them and times are tough。 They have lost the happiness and joy from their lives and Dad is particularly troubled。 He decides to make a decision for all the family that will change their lives forever, but not in the way they think。 Having been asked to read the first chapter of this for English class at University, I couldn't put it down and ended up devouring the book in one sitting。 Whilst it is primarily aimed at the younger reader, the story is magnificently written and opens up plenty of opportunity for reflection。 At the heart of the story Michael has to deal with a range of emotions and feelings that cause conflict internally that he must not only deal with but live with daily as well。 。。。more

A children’s book but a fabulous read for all ages。 A sensitive and emotive story of friendship, isolation and survival which really touched me。 I am still thinking about this story and the concept behind it, I won’t give anything away here, suffice to say it has fascinated me。 The true masterpiece was the poignant ending。 Michael Monpurgo writing at its very best。 I highly recommend this for any age group。

An enjoyable, fast paced 'Boy's Own' adventure, which could appeal to children and adults alike。 Michael is lost at sea and (somewhat fortuitously) survives with the help of a mysterious, desert island bound elderly man。 They begin a difficult relationship of interloper and landlord, but this relationship softens and they become friends in an interchangeable teacher/student system。 Kensuke sees his troubled past in the boy, replacing bad but fading memories of his own son with Michael ('Micasan' An enjoyable, fast paced 'Boy's Own' adventure, which could appeal to children and adults alike。 Michael is lost at sea and (somewhat fortuitously) survives with the help of a mysterious, desert island bound elderly man。 They begin a difficult relationship of interloper and landlord, but this relationship softens and they become friends in an interchangeable teacher/student system。 Kensuke sees his troubled past in the boy, replacing bad but fading memories of his own son with Michael ('Micasan' to the Japanese) while the youngster, believing his own parents lost, teaches Ogawa san to speak English, in a symbiotic relationship; the classic reversal of Vygotsky's theory of social constructivism, as language and culture collide to inform both parties of knowledge neither had before they met。 Each keep the other's spirits up, when hope seems lost at times。 The story is told in waves of colliding emotions through the eyes of an eleven year old Michael via his diary entries, and an adult Michael through his recollection of the events after his ten year promise of silence to Kensuke has been exhausted。 This written style gives access to older child and adult alike, a well spaced out textual arrangement of the book doesn't overwhelm the reader, and some illustrative cameos provide visual stimulation。 As with any fantastic story, there are moments of disbelief; are we to believe that Kensuke is the only survivor from his wartime ship, or that Michael can survive being thrown overboard, along with his dog, to be collected by his parents after a year-long search? However, it would be churlish of me to let this denigrate what is a charming story of adventure, trust, faith and family, particularly as - selfishly - it mentions gibbons, my surname, so often。 。。。more

All I can say is WOW! WOW! WOW! From the moment I picked it up I just couldn’t put it down。 I think I’ve been through every possible emotion while reading this。 I can now understand why the Year 6 teacher in my school uses this book every year!

My 11yo daughter is reading this for school and after reading the back cover I decided to read it too。 It’s a lovely story and I would have loved to read more of the adventures of Micasan and Kensuke together。 I’m so happy I decided to read this and now I can help her with her homework too!!!

Reasonable, with quite a few guided reading and writing ideas, but it has its faults。

This was one of my favourite books growing up! It's treasure island-esque (getting stranded on a lost island) but for children (I read it in year six/10 years old) but honestly the story has always stuck with me and I'll be forcing my future kids to read it too!
